I headed to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, for WIRED. The gulf on the peninsula's eastern side is home to the vaquita, a chubby, adorable porpoise, which is also the most endangered marine mammal on earth, with only a dozen thought to be left. Two scientists, Barbara Taylor and Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho, have dedicated their lives to studying the vaquita, and though the animal's chapter may be closing, their DNA might hold the secret to preventing other species from meeting the same fate.
